Sometimes, when Outlook sends a message using the RTF format, some receiving email clients cannot properly interpret the message and the formatting commands; therefore they display it as a stale winmail.dat attachment. You can prevent Outlook from doing this by following some specific steps and performing some tweaks, but if the situation already happened, the only solution is to convert the winmail.dat file to readable formats. Winmail Opener helps you with that, as it converts winmail.dat files (TNEF-encoded files) to RTF files that can be easily opened and read.

Winmail Opener is very easy-to-use: just select the winmail.dat files that you want to open (dragging-and-dropping them onto the interface of the program is also possible) and the message will be instantly displayed. Then, you can save them as common RTF files, using the associated commands from the “File” menu. That’s all. The only available options are changing the language of the interface or associating the DAT file extension with the program.

This tool is not only very simple, but also reliable. The program managed to open and convert all of the 4 different winmail.dat files that I’ve chosen for this testing. It is also lightweight, neat and resource-friendly. Last but not least, using it costs you nothing: Winmail Opener is completely free.

In conclusion, if you ever need to open and convert a winmail.dat file, this neat and handy tool is a great solution.
